Worship of Goddess Durga( Durga Puja)
P. Gaan
In Hindu Philosophy Durga is the embodiment
Of eternal woman power and energy to overcome predicament
Durga is worshipped in autumn in the month of September or October
commemorating Ram’s victory over Ravan, the Lankan emperor.
The invincible Ravan was killed by Ram being empowered by the deity
So Hindus pray to propitiate the Goddess with pomp and gaiety
The ancient saints to evoke her blessings have chanted verses,
“Oh Goddess, the fountainhead of energy, save us from all adverse circumstances.
Take us to the path of truth from untruth, from darkness to light
Also take us from death to immortality making our lives bright.”
Untruth is weakness and truth is the strength of mind
Darkness is ignorance and light means knowledge of the right kind
Death means sorrows, sufferings, agonies and unhappiness abounding in this world,
Immortality means mental peace and happiness to face this world being bold.
Thus, worship of the Goddess infuses in the mind a sense of peace and security,
In the Indian subcontinent this is a public celebration irrespective of one’s sect and community.
