It didn't happen like it should have

You used to dream in colour about a fiery future
And when the sun would sink, and when the heat would rise
To your cheeks, and the spotlight glimmer in your eyes
You would tell them all about it in a wonder whisper
You used to chase around the pigeons and the butterflies
You used to walk on water and dance on top the embers
You used to laugh, you used to sing, you used to be alive
It wasn't long ago, I know you still remember
Oh I know it breaks your heart, I know you still remember
But the rain came beating down
Now the pavement is slippery and uneven
And you stumble, and you fall
And there's nothing you can do
The cruel night came creeping in around you
Now you can't see where you're going
And the anger and the tears
Won't change anything about it
All that's left is passion
What a cruel joke it is
When the body shrinks and falters,
The mind struggles to break free
Now the words are blurred and twisted in your head
I know you still remember though, and that's what breaks my heart
