SWEET REVENGE
"For god’s sake can't you get a move on?" Jacko pulled the peek of the unfashionably worn baseball cap further down and by so doing emphasising the badged words in gold on a red background identifying him as a "HOT SHOT". He then re-opened the Sun newspaper which shook in his thin, grubby, young hands, fingers already stained from cigarettes. He peered over the top of it, up and down the suburban street.
"Keep your hair on, I've nearly got it!" Bennie eased the credit card further into the lock and then with a click the door fell open under his weight. Both lads tumbled in and Jacko slammed the door shut.
"Thank Christ for that, I was scared shitless just standing there. Me hands have gone all sweaty." He dropped the paper on the floor and wiped his hands on his already stained, faded and torn jeans.
"Nothing to it, piece of cake. I've done plenty worse. Least I could see this time. Most jobs I've done have been at night. I know she won't be back for a while 'cos her daughter has taken the old woman to the hospital for her weekly check up."
"But someone else might come"
"No they won't. No one ever comes here. Anyhow, if you're worried, you keep a look out by the window in the front room, while I search the rest of the house. But stay away from the window itself. Don't want anyone to see you if they do pass." Bennie left the room and Jacko could hear him rummaging around upstairs.
That's where Jacko reckoned that she kept the money. He'd seen her whilst he was hanging around in the post office getting her pension. He had told Bennie that she could never spend all that money each week and so she must have the rest stashed away somewhere in the house. Jacko looked around the front room and saw himself reflected in the big mirror over the mantle piece. What a prat he looked with his hat like that and turned it round to the way that fashion dictated. He noticed a large biscuit tin on the mantle piece and crossed the room to it. As he was looking inside it, he noticed a car drawing up outside, reflected in the mirror. And someone was getting out! Running to the door, he slammed the lid on the tin and shouted up the stairs.
"Bennie, there's a car outside. We've got to get out of here fast" He ran into the back room as Bennie tumbled down the stairs behind him. Jacko had got the back door open and was halfway across the garden with Bennie on his heels as the front door opened and a young woman helped the old lady up the steps.
"Christ! That was a close one" puffed Jacko, as they ran down the back lane and into the main road. The crossed into the Park and fell into a shelter.
"What a waste of time, I found nothing upstairs. Not even any decent jewellery or a radio."
"Never mind, I struck lucky. Picked this up as I saw the car arrive and this has got gold in it." He took off his cap and emptied the contents of the tin into it. A stream of gold coins spilled into it. He picked one out and held it up for Bennie’s inspection.
"Ain't that great. What a find on my first job! What do you think we will get for them?"
Bennie took the coin and then bit the edge of it as he had seen gangsters do in films. His eyes opened wide with surprise and he looked closely at it again
"You berk!. These aren't gold. They're bloody chocolate!"
