Man's muscled limb
P K Routray
Tongue a limb unique
to taste and speak,
a function
of organ of action,
another for sense
to get a feeling intense,
more critical than ear and eye
when nose is blocked, breathing it does try.
It may act at times funny and fickle
The Almighty has kept it behind bar with permanent shackle.
It is one of the softest organs with no bone
But has the power to buckle the teeth stronger than stone.
With no bone
with muscles alone
It can hurt or heal
crush a man even with will of steel,
can inculcate inspiring zeal
to fight battle of life facing task uphill.
Once a word slips out of it
to the society it does instantly hit
like an arrow out of quiver
once shut returns never.
Tastes both sweet and bitter
amalgamates food with saliva for digestion better.
As punishment in the days of yore
tongue is cut off of a liar to settle the score.
But today tongue aids to speak a lie in the name of God,
for pelf and power for the greed and the political fraud.
If the old judgment is honored and served
man today will be without tongue as deserved.
Then peace and tranquility will prevail everywhere
Then the earth as heaven, the almighty can safely declare.
