Rose-Colored Glasses

Giggling,
glassy-eyed,
cross-eyed
parents placed
an unused pair
of rose-colored
glasses,
over their
daughter's eyes,
the very instant
she was born.
Placed an open
Bible in her hand,
repetitive words
on her tounge,
wires in her
arms, legs,
and spine,
and there she was.
The perfect
little puppet,
all dressed up
in her pretty
pink dress
that set off
the hue of
her eyes
that were always
masked by
those sly
rose-colored
glasses.
Content in their
own make-believe
world,
the parents
giggled
as their perfect
little daughter
was propelled
through life
by the strings
attached to her
limbs,
and the constantly
open Bible
in her hands.
But then
the perfect little
daughter
grew up, and
her strings were
taken off,
so she could be
a Pinocchio
in the next
Disney movie
about lunacy and
religion.
The Pinocchio
that had once
been the perfect
little daughter
of such
happy,
giggling,
glassy-eyed,
cross-eyed
parents
was now
noticing how
hard it was
to keep
her rose-colored
glasses
on her nose,
and in front
of her eyes.
One day,
though,
she tripped,
and her mask
of unreality,
slipped from
her face and
fell into a
near-by sewer.
The world
wasn't so
perfect-looking
after it lost
its rose-colored
tint,
and
those parents
wonder why
they lost their
perfect little
daughter,
their Pinocchio,
to her hellish
act of suicide,
when she hung
herself from those
same puppet
strings that
she had had on
for too long.
If only everyone
could see the
world through
rose-colored
glasses
all of the time.
