Door Hero

I've bought the doors for a song
A boy with a new house replacing
wise old pine with something cheap
from B&Q.
We load them in the car, I tighten straps
drive carefully
admiring myself for getting something
beautiful to cherish
and bringing it home hanging out of the hatchback.
Like I once brought us a bed.
I'm clever and brave, taking corners gingerly
easing myself over speed bumps
the falling dark, a thrill
each roundabout a challenge.
Back home the neighbours are out
I like to think they're admiring too,
He offers us hinges, she holds
their little dog in her arms
and I feel I could do anything
It's rising in me, bursting.
I'm the hero who got the doors.
That's who I am.
