Chapter 21
Children of the Moon
A warm breeze whispered against Kia’s goose bumped skin. Tingling with energy and persistence, it gathered around her shivering body like a cat curling around and caressing it owner’s ankles. This ‘cat’ however was slowly winding itself around Kia’s entire body. She did not know it but it was searching for every way in. Even the pores of her skin were points of entry. This was no breeze. Nor was it Kia’s first encounter with it. Not that long ago it took her and Kian, the result was tragic but not necessarily intentional, Kia recognized the sensation but not soon enough to run from it, not that she could anyway.
Alexander was already in it throws. However, unlike the last time this ‘breeze’ paralyzed Alexander and had him off his feet before he could even think to struggle. They were in the cave this time not by the dying wall. That made all the difference.
The cave was an anteroom to a far greater deeper reality. Its’ purpose like the darkness of the death walk was all encompassing and impossible to fathom without light. However, they had light. They were light. Their intent was pure the breeze had already ferreted it out. It shone about them like the Sun’s corona. Kia saw it when her pupils shrank to a pinpoint. She also saw Alexander floating through a glass -like archway.
A needle of panic pricked her mind. The breeze spirited it away, seeping deep in her body at every access point, relieving her of fear as well her consciousness. Now she was floating, sliding parallel to floor, which was no longer rough stone but like the walls and ceiling, highly polished crystal, clear as glass but infinitely more conductive.
Shifting rivulets of pink, gold azure and orange pulsated beneath them. Their light faded, having served its’ purpose, retreating inside. Rainbows danced all along the tubular hallway, they now traversed like flying sleepwalkers. Another universe waited.
Neither saw the crystal tube give way. Like bits of straw carried by a stream, they crossed another threshold and gently floated to the center of another crystal sphere, senseless. This one however dwarfed the first one by miles. This they did not see at first…
Weeks past unnoticed. The sphere’s core held them fast, doing its work with silent flawless efficiency, meeting all their needs mundane and sublime.
The last day of the second month Kia’s right eyelid twitched. Movement heralded existence. New beings had formed. The sphere was about to give birth.
Alexander heard a whimper. It sounded a thousand miles away, even though its source had been floating by his side for two entire months. He wagged his head. Zero gravity cushioned it. Another whimper, he turned his head toward the sound. The whimper became words.
“Kian lives…”
