When you read a verse or song
you once composed, maybe so long
a time ago, does it bring back
the scene described, or sometimes have a knack
to recall where you were the time this thought
rushed into mind so clearly that you sought
out pen and paper quickly to record
for later use the phrase, idea, word:
    Remembering the pleasure at the captured line –
    that memory linked forever to that place and time.

I love these rhymes! It flows so well,  the line endings are so smooth? It's what I am always aiming for when attempting to do rhyming and don't achieve :0)

Do you always remember the seed of writing, when you read it years later? It seems to help me, if about an event, but general stuff cannot remember writing at all

No, I don't remember all of the origins and occasions of my writing. But there are some things that stick a bit, and occasions I have long remembered certain words or phrases coming to complete a line better etc, and I thought we probably all have experiences of it. I remember years ago, walking with a pushchair to the shops where we lived and struggling over a children's song that needed a lot of thought, and a line coming better, and I think I had to stop buy a biro, and go into the local library to write it down on a free leaflet. I don't remember now exactly which it was, but for a very long time I did.

Yesterday, I was showing this poem to my 100 year-old mother-in-law and then showing her some of her own verse she wrote about 30 or more years ago about walking by the shore, and in different seasons, and her face was lighting up and it seemed to bring the occasions so happily back to her and I think there was one line she seemed to remember catching hold of the word that really expressed her feelings just right about the scene and the wind.

love your story about getting caught out with no way to write :0)

it must be brilliant for your mother in law to have someone so kind, showing so much care and interest. It is good that you share the love for writing. Did you have to write her poem  all out huge for her to read?

Yes, she has one poor eye, but as her hearing is v v poor, I write things on a pad very big, and typed out some of her poems awhile ago, and others. She said yesterday that she would like them made into a book, so I told her I had copied them out of the books her husband had made of them, and showed her a fun 'poem' he'd made about his efforts. That also helped her as as they squabbled a lot and didn't understand each other frequently (she didn't explain herself well, and he was rather a self-absorbed worrier), and now she often remembers the difficulties and forgets about the good times they had and in that poem he uses his pet personal familiar name for her.

Some food for thought in this poem Rhiannon. You got me thinking about when, where and how I came to write a poem or story.I suppose it's a bit like writing a post card to someone and remembering the country or resort, but not absolutely sure about what the surroundings were.

Thanks, Jenny. The two thoughts running through my head of sometimes remembering more vividly the place described in the writing, sometimes remembering the place and situation where an idea came into my head, or a solution for a 'writing problem'! Rhiannon

It's a very good idea to keep a diary / writer's notebook. It helps to organise your thoughts too.

Thanks, Tom. Yes, I keep starting filling books with scraps of ideas forming, but they get more and more scrappy, and most are organised better and edited when put on the computer. And certainly of things written long ago, there are some keys to know when written, but I was just remembering the flashbacks you can get when reading something of sitting and struggling over getting it to flow and be clear, and of course poetic descriptons of scenes bring such scenes back to mind too.
