… and Proud Middles … (IP)

"When I was young
I had just begun
and was glad to learn from my ‘betters’;
but when I knew more
than I had before
I thought I’d shake off the fetters
of hearing and heeding
and their advice needing,
and claim some authority on matters
on which I had swotted,
a few concepts spotted,
professed myself Someone of Letters –
so pleased to be pompous,
confident, ruthless
to keep in the lead of ‘go-getters’.
I came down with a thump,
a crash and a bump
with my false reputation in tatters.
The more that we learn,
should make us discern
we’ll always be gleaners and debtors
for wisdom a wiser one scatters,
our notions of false grandeur shatters."
