[Continuing the hymn-for-Sundays series] [written yesterday]

Perseverance hand in hand
through the ups and downs unplanned,
disappointments, joys, all shared,
always knowing we have cared
for each other, understood
when we don’t do what we should.

Note the passage of the years –
‘paper’, ‘crystal’ … each one shares
benefits of loyal vows  –
each year quickly comes and goes …
‘silver’, ‘ruby’, on to gold –
look back, view the years unfold.

See the One whose presence held
in our differences, to weld
foolish, wilful souls to one
purpose, ’til the journey’s done,
strengthened so we’d complement.
help each other trust, repent.

This is lovely Rhiannon! Although I cannot really speak but I do know people married for so long. Maybe the secret is in acceptance and being tolerant. Mostly in the marriages I've known it is a healthy clean honest life

Thank you very much. Nolan. There's so little taught of managing long-term in marriage relationship with our flawed human natures, with, as you say, honesty, and not having highly glamourised expectations that thrust away at the first hurt or bit of thoughtlessness, and of course having a relationship with the One who can show us our own failings and help heal, and give strength, honesty and wisdom. So I wanted to share something of that and realism in the journey of marriage! Rhiannon

The feeling of togetherness is wonderful in your poem, very interesting to compare with the sort of poem people write at the beginning of a relationship.

I love the first stanza!  "Perseverance hand in hand" is brilliant :0) The image stayed with me through the poem. Was thinking of you intrepidly travelling the cloud scape in your  lightning poem :0)

Have lived with my partner 17 years and your poem reminds me of the best bits, thankyou!

Thank you , Di. As I wrote to Nolan, expectations these days can be so unrealistic, and especially about our own failings, and good advice on working at misunderstandings and irritations are thin on the ground, and making divorce quicker will probably prevent some 'sortings-out' that have in the past happened in the more lengthy process, with many couples and kids losing out. Certainly my husband and I aren't perfect and our backgrounds and upbringings were different enough to cause much misunderstanding of actions, words and body language! but our praying together to the one God has been key.
