Bird-feeder Drama

Big fat pigeon sees birds upon the feeder,
stalks around below like the avian leader,
poking round for pickings, quick to espy
‘crumbs from the table’ when they float from high.

Later comes to look, but finds no morsels there,
glances up – will any birds unwittingly soon share?
we’re glad if he can hoover up what drops below
– for we’re really not too keen for bird-seed plants to grow!

I can certainly relate to this Rhiannon- I watch the birds om our feeding tray every day and marvel at their behaviour. Blackbirds always chase all the other birds away from the tray. But all my birds feed on the seeds on the ground,titmouse,bull finches and sparrows. I do think that there will be quite a few sunflowers sprouting come Spring but I will just pull them up and maybe leave a few to grow tall- I love sunflowers. I really enjoyed your little poem about the pigeons. I have them as well as doves. Do you have a birdbath? I do- it freezes over at the moment and I am forever pouring boiling water to thaw it and then cold water which almost immediately freezes over again. Sysiphos work. ;)Pia

Thank you, Pia. You must have much drama to watch! Do you keep a little record? We had got slack for a number of reasons last winter over putting out some food. But this Christmas we were given 2 feeders so I've hung them up again - there isn't a table, so the pigeon has to wait for what falls. We don't have a bird bath (as yet?). What does 'Sysiphos work' mean? warm regards, in this cold, cold weather - colder for you, I'm sure. Rhiannon

Yeps we have snow at the moment and freezing temperatures. Sisyphos- how do you spell it? The old Greek who had to push a rock uphill as a punishment and it rolled down everytime he reached the top- this was his punishment for some crime. Do you know who I mean now? Oh do get a birdbath the birds will love it- they also do need water to drink and bathe. It's such fun watching them bathe and drink. Small pleasures! ha ha ;)Pia

Ah, sorry, yes I'd forgotten the name! A bird bath sounds fun, though the area around here in Herefordshire, England is very soggy at present! and there is a little pool in the school grounds just behind our garden, but they have cut off access to it recently, and we can't quite see down to the level of it from our upstairs window! keep warm, and enjoy your bird-feeding, Rhiannon

Nice scene "...Big fat pigeon..." two of in our garden, plump lazy buddies waiting for the seeds to fall, plus a buzzard that sits on the roof opposite. And the occasional fox.

You paint a very familiar picture for me, Rhiannon. I love to feed the birds, but of late, have had to curtail it because I have sighted quite a few rats, which, this cold winter, have been a real problem round here. Soon though, I hope to resume normal service for the birds, especially as we have snow and a really hard frost. Very much enjoyed your poem. Tina

Hi Rhiannon

I enjoyed reading this, and all the comments that followed. I live in a semi-detached bungalow, and the man who owns the other half is a bird nut. He has dozens of bird feeders and a huge bird house with lots of holes and such. I do feed a few in my garden, but mostly they depend on him and I can see them just as easily in his bit of the garden. I do have a small pottery dish on a pole that I stick up in my garden. The food goes into the cup park and the water into the saucer below, and its cute and small and only attracts very small birds.

In reading this again, I realise how this last winter we've fallen behind, due, I think, to the big caring problems we had, and hope next winter to be more regulary again in bird feeding and watching. I was also interested to see how many reads some of these little poems seem to have had since the initial reads and comments time. Rhiannon
