Footpath through a Herd!

Footpath through the field,
a crowd concealed
of cows young and frisky
(any nursing young, or short-fused bulls?)
– is it too risky?
we can’t turn back:
walk quietly forward,
– not a coward,
nor wisdom lack
(no dogs that yap,
or flapping cap).
One starts to run
away, the rest then follow,
up from the hollow,
but soon they stop,
don’t reach the top.
One feels curious,
inquisitive, not furious
– they all come on again,
and start to trot,
we must keep calm,
and quiet, not
get jumpy-scared
of a friendly herd,
or squeal, or squeak,
panic or shriek;
quite suddenly they swerve
follow-my-leader
and gallop off with verve
right up the bank, quite high.
We reach the stile,
exhale a sigh:
relief!!

Hi Rhiannon
Hi Rhiannon
I really enjoyed this one - as I, like Tina, had a similar experience, and could almost have written it myself (except we did have a dog). Your length of line and choice of words gives the feeling of panic and the hasty exit.
In our case, my husband picked up our dog and we ran, probably faster than I have ever run in my life, for the stile. We've often walked through herds of cows on our rambles, but that was the only time we had trouble.
