to note them down
on paper or screen –
put in groups to convey
a word where they’re blended,
so that which we say
to tell what we mean
can by many be seen
and repeated around.

It's just that I don't think children would understand it. It is meant for kids? Well Ok, older kids maybe.

Oh, no, this isn't filed under the 'for children' section!

No, just thoughts (as the IP was about doing something about 'Letters'}, my thoughts went to how people have endevoured in different nations to make symbols to represent sounds (ie 'letters'} to enable the writing down of our thoughts. Something still being done in some cultures which up to now haven't had a written alphabet, and the language has remained just spoken. Hope that clarifies it! Rhiannon

Reading this again, don't know why it made me think of a necklace, now it seems like a canvas with thick brush strokes of bright colours! I still really like your idea of sounds/letters being things, I would be very interested to know how your grandchildren feel about this, as they are learning language? Are words like coloured bricks, sentences like bridges? I want to copy it out to keep so don't forget, would you mind?

I was  just fascinated with the idea of how sounds have been associated with symbols that can be
put on paper and enabled the recording of thoughts.

I suppose they can be like a necklace or strokes of paint or bricks, but merging together to make the ‘sound’ or the word.
It is interesting to watch the increasing grasp of language by the three year old. One of the helpers at her nursery thought she had a communication problem, but just didn’t realies how long she was thinking  before replying, considering a lot of ramifcations about the question which the helper hadn’t expected her to! I think my mother used to call it being ‘long-headed'! The 18 month-old is more interested in climbing , and wondering why she falls, than bothering to speak much, though it is coming now, but her understanding has clearly been moving on in leaps and bounds, but would just point saying ‘eh’ about so much, and wait for others to guess her requirements.
Of course, by all means copy it if you like it, or anything!

 Often I am trying to post something when my computer conks out and I forget what I was doing. Keep having to switch it off as can do nothing on the screen, which seems the computer version of hitting someone over the head. I hope you find out what is up with yours!

Your grand daughter sounds so like my son when he was little :0)
