School Fete, fancy dress:
Gladys Aylward and Tenzing.
Tenzing frowns, suffering
from the June heat I think,
engulfed in his parka,
and holds a plastic cup attached
to ‘oxygen-skittles’ on his back,
a home-made ice-axe
and a card with a number 10
and music notes coming out of lips,
to make clear his name.
Gladys’ grandmother has
made a good attempt at
a Chinese costume,
and so Gladys just grips
a Gideon testament.

I see, like Luigi, that you've also been having fun going through old photos. I enjoyed this Rhiannon, and what imaginative ideas for fancy dress!

Thanks, Insert. I think for once, my imagination did work fairly well, and they got involved as well, and I think my mother was staying too, so all minds at work, and hands on deck! Rhiannon

Memories are always great to share. By the way, is Tenzing a welsh name? I've never heard of it before.

Thanks, Jenny. No, Welsh hasn't got a 'Z'. Sherpa Tenzing (Tenzing Norgay) was one of the two who first went up Mount Everest, with Edmund Hillary on 29 May 1953. My son at that age loved reading of such feats! Rhiannon

This is a lovely snapshot in time Rhiannon. I feel like people stretched their imaginations a little more back then and then was less shame in choosing something a bit different and making use of what you had.

Thank you, Jane. Yes, I was noticing the £5 (I think that was the price) costumes in local supermarkets for world book day costumes, the other day, and know that where my grandchildren were there was a tendency for some kids to have posh costumes, and in the rush as well, the fun of scraping together a costume with ideas got lost.
