Mary, the mother of Jesus

A simple honest girl, probably a teenager,
imperfect like us all,
but with faith and trust in the saving God
was shocked when an angel came to call
with astonishing message awesome:
she questioned, she listened,
humbly accepted
and trusted in the months to come,
bearing the danger with quiet courage,
treasuring up what the shepherds reported,
fulfilling the motherhood of he
who was to be Saviour* –
her Saviour – and the other children
conceived after her marriage
to Joseph.
A sword pierced her heart**
as her firstborn son was killed.
Entrusted by him to John’s care
as he spoke from the cross***,
Her other sons had become believers,
and she and they became part of the waiting church****,
after the resurrection, and ascension to heaven,
and before the coming
of the equipping Spirit,
and all prophesies were fulfilled.

*** John 19: 26,27
**** Acts 1:14
