Fizzing fireworks brief and bright
red and orange, gold and white,
rocket, catherine wheel and candle,
silent sparklers – carrot handle
for the metal rod, to hold
easily, with care controlled:
children’s beaming sheer delight
fire displays on bonfire night

It was Divali they have the festival of lights now I wonder because is a very a important feast of the Hindus, I wonder, because the fireworks were banned this year.They probably just had them anyway.

Do they have November 5 bonfire night in South Africa? Noting to do with Divali and the Hindu religion.

It started to remind of the failed 17th-century attempt to blow up Parliament and assassinate King James I. There are bonfires, and fireworks. I think there were less big displays this year because of the financial crisis. This was a small occasion for 2 families with small children to meet up and let the children experiemce not-too-noisy fireworks. Rhiannon

I don't know the exact days for Divali but it is this time of the year. Nice poem very colourful.

loved "children beaming sheer delight" that's perfect, somehow conveying their stiffness as they hold a sparkler for the first time, but also the joy in their faces, the intensity of this moment. Wonderful

ps didn't know about carrot handles, they seem a very useful innovation

Thank you. You are such a careful, insightful reader! I hadn't thought about the stiffness conveyed, but of course that is how they are in their pleasure and awe!

I hadn't heard of the carrot handles until Saturday, but my daughter in law had picked it up somewhere, and they worked really well. I don't know if we had the carrots recylced on Sunday when we were eating all together! Rhiannon
