A captive audience. We had a party game as kids called (broken) telephone or something you can't believe what comes out there. Not that I was ever invited to a party my friends were always the crims. The "negative elements".

I suppose the game was making up alternatives for the 'other side of the conversation'!

It's usually just thoughtlessness on the part of the speaker, not imagining what it's like for the 'overhearer' not to be aware of the incoming conversation! Thanks for reading! Rhiannon
