Promised from the beginning

[Continuing the hymn-for-Sundays series]
A God who is almighty,
a God who does not lie,
a God who knows the future,
and promised to supply
eternal life, forgiveness,
God’s blessing – and He came.
We’re safe if He’s our Saviour
– Christ Jesus is his name.
He’d come to deal with Satan,
and crush his power, this mess
He’d mend, and people could return
to God from sin’s distress.
One day, He spoke to Abram,
– his family would hear
about God’s ways, and promise that
with grace He would come near.
We all need God to teach us,
and prophets brought His Word,
and pointed to the coming of
the perfect Teacher-Lord.
The sacrifices, offerings,
were pictures, pointing on
to Jesus, who, as sacrifice
for all who trust, would come.
This Servant would be willing
to suffer, though a King;
and we can be released from guilt,
and His new life begin.
So God sent John the Baptist
the people to prepare –
their Teacher-King, as promised,
would then Himself appear.
He would be born in Bethlehem –
foretold so long ago
by God through prophet Micah,
His plan to surely show.
2000 years ago He came –
is Jesus now your Friend? –
forgiven and supported,
on Him you can depend.
‘eternal life, which God, who does not lie, promised before the beginning of time’ Titus 1:2
