[Continuing the hymn-for-Sundays series]
Look onward, up – the city goal:
for them, Jerusalem;
for me, the glory where my Lord
dwells, and has bid me come.
For he is there who is my help
forevermore, and now.
The Maker of the heaven and earth
keeps watch where’er I go.
Protection, care, he leads and guides;
my Father never sleeps;
his people he preserves and guards –
each one in safety keeps.
Tune: CM eg Crimond tune of ‘The Lord’s my Shepherd’
I lift up my eyes to the hills – where does my help come from?
My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.
He will not let your foot slip – he who watches over you will not slumber;
indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.
The Lord watches over you – the Lord is your shade at your right hand:
the sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night.
The Lord will keep you from all harm – he will watch over your life;
the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and for evermore. Psalm 121
[This psalm is one of those labelled ‘Songs of ascents’ probably referring to the annual pilgrimage to Jerusalem, and up to Mount Zion, but is also appropriate for the pilgrimage of life to the glory into which those who trust him will be received.]
