Saved from distress

[Continuing the hymn-for-Sundays series]
Not just a formal nod to God
lips giving vague acknowledgement,
but having warm relationship
real thankfulness declared and meant.
For sadly some have only thought
of what they want and have not sought
to please their Maker – sometimes they
‘religious games’ will choose to play.
And many wander trying this
or that human philosophy,
and many long for light, and feel
the burdens, gloom press weightily,
and do not realise that the source
is that they’ve chosen their own course
and not accepted wisdom’s way
honouring God, and Him obey.
But if they cry in their distress
to Him, He’s always quick to hear;
they scorned the way he’d made to bless,
rejected Christ, the Saviour dear,
and to his death they showed contempt
nor thought upon what it had meant,
but if they now desire, reach out
they’ll find what grace is all about.
Tune: DLM
