Graceful ‘greyhound’ stretching twigs,
firm, sooty buds –
late to open – before the leaves appear,
see first the bursting flowers’ purple froth,
and the female ones soon morph,
becoming autumn’s
dangling key bunches:

rare sight now where ‘Ash die-back’ has struck.

I like how you describe

Thank you , Jenny. I love the shape of Ash branches in winter, and the buds are so late opening, and then to see this odd froth from them! Rhiannon

It's such a shame we're losing so many of these lovely trees.  I love the description of the 'purple froth' - really evocative!

Yes, they are lovely trees. I don't think we have lost many around here yet. I hope there will be resistant varieties that survive and can be planted. Rhiannon

They ARE  greyhound trees! How brilliant of you to think of this!  Graceful, light and whippy.  My favourite tree :0) Have you heard the rhyme

if the oak is out before the ash, we are in for a splash

but if the ash is out before the oak it will be a soak

or something

Thank you, yes, and that rhyme sounds like 'if you can see across the Bristol Channel it's going to rain, if you can't see across, it#'s raining!' Rhiannon
