Sixpence

Sing a song of sixpence –
how many can it buy –
Hot cross buns for everyone,
but is the price too high?
buy sugar, egg and butter
and flour to pat a cake ? –
but if it’s only tea for two,
there’ll be no need to bake
– just pop ourselves a spoonful
of sugar in to make
our teatime cuppas sweeter …
… No, what a waste, mistake,
I’ll keep my sixpence, so …
"I’ve got sixpence,
I’ve got tuppence to spend,
and tuppence to lend
and tuppence to send home to my wife".*
– Let’s go to Widdecombe fair,
pay the bus with pennies to spare –
swing high, swing low,
sweet chariot chair,
til home we penniless go …
… "I’ve got no pence to spend,
and no pence to lend
and no pence to send home to my wife."*
[* quoted from the scout song ‘I’ve got sixpence’]

Young children would love
Young children would love hearing this one read out loud. Mind you they might not know what a sixpence was, or tupence, but it would be interesting for them to learn about old money.
Like insert said, a clever I P.
Jenny.
