So near, so far

Unmasked smile
eyes interlock through glass awhile
bright twinkle, blown kiss
– its touch they miss,
and chatter lost
– another cost
for young and old
of virus regulation,
and lack of social interaction
for mutual impression
of the generation bridges
without windows.

It must have been so difficult for people with dementia to understand - the restrictions are lifting now, aren't they?

Thanks for your comment, Di. Hard for old and young, though decisions weren't easy, I know. I have great admiration for the local care home. The residents are obviously in  'death's waiting room', but though recognising their need (and the need of the staff) for visitors they were aware how difficult it would be to cope if the virus came in and ran rampant through residents and staff. The staff took on the role of extra support to help the residents understand as far as possible, and with some help them learn to use technology, and also supply all the exra interest, love and touch.

Yes, things are opening up. My mother-in-law wouldn't have understood looking through a window, but gradually the visits my husband and son have been able to make are getting less formal. Her hearing is so bad, but she loves to hear David play old songs and hymns on his violin.

There were many stories of grandparents looking at their young grandchildrenthrough windows as in my poem during the year..

Yes, thank you, Jean. With all her difficulties and consequent up-tightness in earlier years, and her very poor memory and hearing, she does basically seem content and happy in herself now, and that spiritually I think too.

We have been so thankful that she has somehow accepted letters in place of such regular visits and not been troubled with lack of understanding of the pandemic

It is so easy for the elderly to be discontented, or very confused and difficult/. Rhiannon
