Surprise Crop

Walk down the road, and across the bridge,
over the by-pass, and up to the ridge
(Care-Home snugly sitting below,
– pop in to Gran  to say, ‘Hello’ –
they’ve big wide windows, and a willow tree,
as spring creeps on there’s plenty to see)
when high on the hill, look out and down –
Hay Bluff far, and the spread of the town.
Two big fields hold surprise at the top,
rows and rows, for a sunlight crop,
solar-panels angled, lining up to trap,    
(for fuel not food) sun’s energy tap
harvesting a little of alighting power
with man-made cells, not leaf, fruit or flower,
they’re unobtrusive, unseen from below;

we walk the ridge in the breeze, then go
down to the northern end of town,
back along the Lugg, and cut across the park
and home once more before it’s quite dark.

Thank you for taking us with you on your cheerful Spring walk!
Strikes me this might become, with colourful illustrations, a book explaining alternative energy technologies to schoolkids. (I know some excellent illustrators I could put you in touch with.)

Thank you very much for your encouragement, and to know I gave you a taste of a pleasant walk! I have been trying to sort out some of my children's poetry, and hadn't thought of this one. I'll get back to you if I'd like to take up that suggestion, but thanks very much. Rhiannon

Hi Rhiannon

How nice that your mother-in-law has a home that is in a lovely location, to benefit her looking out the window, and you who come to visit her. I have solar panels on my house - which I had put on partly as a monument to my husband, who would have wanted them if they had been available when he was still alive - but also because I assumed it was a good thing to do for the environment. And I haven't regretted it so far. Each day when the sun is shining bright, I do something that requires energy, like washing clothes or cooking in the slow cooker - to make sure I get the most out of my panels.

thanks, Jean. Yes, the home is in a lovely location, and she is someone who likes to feel openness and nature around her and airyness. And wonderful that it is so near that we can easily pop in often, as it is short visits that work best, frequently.
It was a surprise at the top of the hill/ridge to find this big plantation of the panels! I'm glad you have been able to install them and are reaping benefit. Rhiannon
