[Continuing the hymn-for-Sundays series, as this Sunday is 50 days after the day the Resurrection of Jesus is remembered and 10 days after his ascension back to heaven, it is called Pentecost Sunday]
With signs of power, of wind and flame,
the promised Holy Spirit came.
Jesus had promised when he left
he would not leave them weak, bereft.
His Spirit would empower, so they
could tell of pardon, teach the Way
of reconciliation, peace
– the cross of Christ had brought release.
By miracle, upon that day
from all the world, they heard them say
in all their languages, that now
the whole wide world God’s grace could know.
'You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.' Acts 1:8
'A sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house … They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages as the Spirit enabled them.' Acts 2: 2-4
Tune: LM eg Church Triumphant, tune of ‘The Lord is King’
