The thief who changed his mind …

Woke up this morning
what a day ahead:
death by crucifixion:
anger and dread.

Who is this third victim?
– for the guards he prays?
mocked by those below,
with anger I’m ablaze.

They say he calls himself
a King who saves with power
but he cannot (will not?)
exit torture’s hour.

The other thief and I
our failing strength now drain
to add our insults –… though
it’s Rome I hate and blame.

But then my tired brain
thought more – for they had said
he’d saved some, so could he
help me before I’m dead?

When the other thief
once again burst out
I, instead, said, 'We
deserve all that we’ve got,

but this man here is
innocent , and we
should now reach out to God –
…  Jesus, Remember me
(but not my insults, scorn!)

when you come into
into your kingdom’,  …he
replied ‘Truly, today you’ll be
there in Paradise with Me.’’

So now that day is ended,
in eternal day;
here I am — this King
quite soon will sweep away
all injustice on the earth –

so who down there has cheek to ask,
as I did,
for that which proved of  lasting
worth?

Thank you, Jane. I was glad to be there this time, and to hear you reading your piece. I remember when reading it at first thinking it was autobiographical as you seemed sensitive to describing the feelings of the youngsters. Your reading pace seemed good too. Zoom does seem to need a slightly slower pace than face to face.

I suppose my (mildly?) Welsh accent always gives added interest! Rhiannon
