Tiny Water Footprints

‘Why is there water on the kitchen floor?’
We look through the dining room door
and see tiny footprints wet, in a row
crossing the the vinyl,
glint as they catch
the light – briefly show,
evaporating as we watch.

We follow the shapes of the little feet
and find a cup, empty,
sat on a dining seat
and a big splashy puddle down below.

‘Let’s feel your socks – they’re soaking!
You really shouldn’t pour
water on the floor,
and if
by mistake,
you tip your cup,
come and say –
we can get a towel
to mop it,
wipe it all up!’

Lovely little vignette, Rhiannon.  Whenever my daughter, in her twenties, is home, I find size 5 wet footprints all over the bathroom floor.  'Have you seen that fluffy thing there?  It's called a bathmat.'

Is a good thing to notice the first time, before it gets fun to make puddles everywhere ! I liked the detective element in this :0)

!! Like crayoning on lovely walls. My in-laws used to have some chairs with, I think it was fake leather seats, with holes in that a little boy had poked making a nice sound, and were still around to remind him. (I expect he learnt not to do it again!) Rhiannon

Great little poem Rhiannon.

young children do tend love playing with water. When my son was young, he loved to pour water from one container into another in the kitchen and would make such a mess. Funnily enough he enjoyed bath time too and would splash water everywhere.

I loved the lines:-

We follow the shapes of the little feet

and find a cup, empty,

sat on the dining seat

and a big splashy puddle down below.
