Such depth of wisdom vast His:
‘Teach me to listen, not to miss
increasing in my knowing You,
and grow more wise in all I do.

‘So not then hoodwinked easily    
by floods of falsehoods constantly
that batter me or slyly squeeze
into my thoughts with subtle ease.

‘Your wisdom can protect my mind,
and clear my ears, my eyes less blind
to notice error, undeceived;
and strengthened by Your truth received.'

Jesus, praying to his Father, said, "Your Word is Truth" John 17:17

In the King James the first few verses of the Gospel of John,

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.

I would like to see “The Word” also as “Truth” and “Light” as “Knowledge”.

I really like your hymn – simple clear understandable current/modern English prose. Beautiful. Unpretentious.

Misty grey and cold here, overcast, if you are young and in love you might think it's romantic . .. .

Thank you. Yes, Jesus is certainly called the Truth as well as the Word. I  think that he is the Word expresses how he himself by his words and actions makes God known, reveals to us the truth about God. And true knowledge is light to the eyes of our soul.

We have some lovely sunshine today, - what they call an Indian summer I think after a week or so getting quite autumnal.Rhiannon

Hi Rhiannon,

This brought to mind the deception of Iago in Othello, how lies can poison a relationship. So too can our relationship with God be tormented by the wiles of the devil.

Yes, he will do anything to keep us from trusting, receiving Life, forgiveness, grace to live more to please God, and keep us from reading the Bible to be able to combat his lies. Rhiannon

Yes Othello is all about envy and jealousy the most wicked of emotions. I dislike the play intensely, and it's too near truth as well. Where it says by the ten commandments "the Lord your God is a jealous God" I believe must have totally different meaning and it could also be good to check with other translations.

Yes, it is right for God to be jealous of his own honour and the love of his people for he is perfectly holy, pure, loving and in covenant with them. This is nothing  like human jealousy that can as you say, get very ugly, and have hatred for those who have what we would like to have.

Similarly, when it says 'punishing the children for the sins of the fathers to the tihird and fourth generation of those who hate me' it is not saying that they would be punished for what their fathers had done (which is spoken of clearly elsewhere in scripture) unless they follow their fathers and copy doing the same evil things. Obviously children and grandchildren do suffer the ordinary consequences of their parents and grandparents doing great wrong, which should be a sobering reminder to all.
