W: Dancing in the Wind

Leaves dance in the wind,
Butterfly memories of summer past
Caught in the sun's dying rays,
Bright promises drawing us in,
Gloved hands entwining
Against the chill October breeze,
Our faces blushing from warmth within
Pasts dance in the mind.
But dances can't change what's once been done,
There's no return to find the path
Reforming the dream of that perfect moment
To hold it tight in amber,
Untempted by lush green darkness
Sighing from shadows of bordering woods.
Minds dance in time.
Were we to walk that path today
The sun would fail to light our way
Among mouldered leaves trampled in mud.
Untouching, chilled hearts
Would cast a veil of shining frost
Over our years' rotting debris.
Leaves dance in the wind.
No gentle wind
Could rekindle our time
Were we to walk that path today.
A gale would sweep between us
Piercing our gloved dreams
To freeze skeletal fingers within
