Age Comes Calling

A gray-haired gentleman
holds onto specs
morning paper on lap
porch canopy handy when heat
visits his trailer site at 32 C.

flower pots sprinkle
across the lot
Impatiens and Gladiolas
colour the view
Muffins lulled by his rocking
Ida staring from the sofa
her Alzheimer's taking root.

From the swing next lot
children sing
"Old MacDonald had a farm"
voices laughing and carrying on.
A smile wrinkles his face
remembers good times raising
a family and those
long walks with his wife

now their homemade sign says it all:
Ida & John & Muffins.

Bless you, Jenny. So often, we remember how quickly time flew by. And yet we hastened it so. Got to be older to stay up later at bedtime, got to be sixteen to get into my own car, got to be 21 to get into the bars, got to...got to. OMG, I'm now one of those geezers with paunch and bald and my wife saying, "I still love you, hon." Richard LP
