Buckwheat

is a strong-willed Llama, stature
gained from a proud Peruvian background.
The pampas of Patagonia, a distant
memory. Now ensconced in a pasture
at the Murray ranch in Alberta, content
to look over his flock of admirers. There’s
five of them in all and their strutting
noticeable from Dexter cows, two donkeys
and Ernie, a Standard bred horse.
We admire the thoughtful gaze
Buckwheat gives us, piercing eyes
watching our every move. It’s his way
of acknowledging us, as we
gain his friendship.
Now he trots off, cloven hooves
directing him to his favourite mound
of earth. His chain of dominion
over the other animals. His castle
of authority as he surveys his fiefdom,
forgetting us in the leisure of
his own world.
