Inside her tummy a fetus lays
in comfortable repose
beginning to sense
surroundings. An uncertainty --
awareness of sounds
not understanding
comparing storm clouds
to painful expressions. Voices

anger -- searching
for answers -- awaiting
entry into this world. A baby

in life-growth these first years.
Words with thunder
capture his mind
and understanding the meanings --
‘not enough money’
‘why did we keep this child?’
and ‘mistake’ as a shroud
spoken too often.

His first year of school
ahead to claim
soccer
street hockey
hide and seek behind him –

a school bus
in front of the house
students cheering
noisemaking
as his feet step onto the stairwell
anger
searching for answers
and a seething
from being a
‘mistake’ ahead of him.

This is a fitting one to begin with Richard, I've just been watching a programme about drinking while pregnant. There is nothing as unattractive or ugly in the world than a drunk pregnant woman. You take on responsibility for that child and it has no choice about whether to have a cigarette or a drink with the mother. It's something that I'm passionate about. So coming to this immediately afterwards was like a continuation. Lovely writing.

Hello Sooz... thank you for your comments. So true. I did something really different in this poem since there is so much talk these days about how to deal with bullies. Well, it begins way back. Parents do not realize the impact they have all through a young child's life. Richard
