The Changing Guard

Sunlight sweeps a blast of bright
across grassy lawns
before rainbows disappear into the night
riding on a cavalcade
of iridescent light
trembling aspen parading
a clatter of leaves in today’s
windy rush.
We join its ecstasy of celebration
dressed in warmth, anxious
for coming snow:
a novice weatherman’s report
this year will overrun last year’s
climate conditions, he says:
a storm of fleece
that should develop
into something colder
than an icicle’s snap.
