A gentleman of gray-haired
disposition carefully
folds his morning specs
places the newspaper
on lap, wipes a sweaty brow
trailer canopy really handy when
32 C visits your porch.
Flowerpots sprinkle his rental
lot, Impatiens and
Gladiolas colouring the view
Muffins asleep at
his feet, Ida staring from the sofa
Alzheimer’s taking root.
From the next trailer children voice
"Old MacDonald’s Farm"
verses changed, high-pitched
laughter. A knowing
smile warms his crinkled face, of
canoeing memories, long
walks with his wife, holding hands
in the bathing warmth of
evening sun, family
grown older.
A front lawn sign sums it up–
WELCOME, from
Ida, John and Muffins.
