A Family of Feathers

They came

scooping-in

 the four

of them

Blue Jays

as family-hood

black seeds

a delicacy

each taking turns

to snatch their

prize–

but first

the larger peanuts

more attractive

yes-

two couples

‘til

the end.

I've never seen a Blue Jay before, so it was such a pleasure to read your poem. I've read they frequent gardens in Canada, it must be such a wonderful sight with their pretty blue feathers.

Jenny, your comments and observations on my work are truly appreciated. I always pray over the words chosen to the best quality I can do. These magnificent family birds mate for life and they separate to scour the area for good food, especially for roasted peanuts with a shell & a second favourite food is black seeds.When one of the two couples that frequent our back apt. porch spot any food they screech ffor the others. Usually the screecher will not take one peanut until the others arrive. We now have them trained to come within a time frame of eight to eight -fifteen AM just like a clock. They will NOT take more than one peanut each so they all get one. Funny to see is they pick up one or two peanuts weighting them for size and weight before making a final selection. I learned to observe very carefully, mannerisms for many birds since I was disabled from m brain-aneurysm in 1999, from which I have recovered much of my limitations. Writing has been wonderful therapy for me. Bless you dear from my wife, Esther and I, who have celebrated 47 years of marriage as of March 27, 2022. We live in Truro, Nova Scotia.
