John Cabot Trail, Cape Breton
Surveying his land of kingdom
a moose trots into view
highway his path, scuffling
up the hillside
without a glance at
open tourist
mouths. Then we’re off to
Port Hood Village, shouts of joy
hauling in a 600 lb tuna
fishing habits alive in
a harbour of fisherman-woes.
When we spy the shore
at Meat Cove
Atlantic fins ripple, whales
frolicking as children in
playful moments, a
landscape
of joy. Later we
sail at Baddeck, visit
Margaree Valley, beachcombing
by Cheticamp, admire
clustered birch at Ingonish
postcard scenes provide
flashcards, the land, its people,
a sea of memory.
