Lady of the Eyes
Ochre-skinned woman
burqa tight against eyebrows
a gift from mama.
Not the glance
of a young girl from neon Paris
nor scented gardens
in Spain
she’s from the land of Afghanistan
with little grass to soothe
hardened soles
dust storms welcoming travelers
memories of famine
and refugees worn thin through war.
Now shops open in market places
Taliban oppression
subdued from collective victories
women no longer sold
for passion
their new choice is schooling
yet further news from Kandahar
provides an anxious hush
as gunpowder
continues to smolder.
