Mother deer awoke
with an urgency
she sensed danger nearby
and her young one
slept no more
as both raced down
an ancient trail
three shaggy wolves
chasing her scent.
And much later
all lay in tired disarray
wolves on
a higher peak and deer
sheltered below
momma worried about her
young one
in a world full of woe
knowing somehow
her little one would survive
after the day
of mother deer’s
last footprint.

Wolves gotta eat too, of course. Good poem. Powerful ending.
