Man on His Tractor

 

Haying done

spotted like freckles are the

mounds--

it was early morning when work began.

 

First the mowing

then raking

next bailing and bundles

across the field

 

acreage stretching to the sun.

The man prideful

of his rows

perfection in his bales

 

forgiving tiredness in his frame

knowing sheep and cattle will cavort

in the sweetness of the grain.

 

The life of a young farmer

at peace with himself

with fields of promise to fulfill.

Bless you Rhiannon for your many kind comments. This poem was in honour of our grandson, Matthew who manages a 3,500 acre farm, and continues to do so, in Alberta. This time he was working on his dad and mom's 80 acres and I watched him work for about two hours. I was mesmerized by his devotion to quality work so that everything he cut from the perfectly straight rows of hay were properly prepared for bailing. He was just 24 at the time and could easily put in a 14 hour day going from one farm to another. Phew, lots of work..

I love the structure of this and, as Rhiannon said, the picture of contentment through hard work.  So interesting too, to hear the story behind it.  Very enjoyable read.

Thank you so much, AF. Our grandson is so laid back and one day he will make a good husband and father. I wish we could afford to buy him a farm near his parents in Houston, northern BC.
