More Than a Poem

In love with a dream
sloppy pants, farmer boots
wearing socks on a day
when mosquito bites do not
make me happy. Some
victims take a swig of gin
but I soak myself in deet.
The dawn is what makes
me smile, a wild heart quiet
as a whispering shadow;
sky ablaze, promise of summer.
I come alive in the dance
of field and stream.
The glory of daffodils,
a loon’s melodic cry
red embers in a sleeping sky.
I live.
