Stoking the fire means

warmth

for hiking

on a very cold day

pasted to a northern wind.

 

A deer poking his head

through

flailing flakes

shows there is other

life besides me in what

may be considered

an out-of-control blizzard

 

but of course

favoured chickadees full

of flips

are challenging  

 my resources

to pull myself up and

snowshoe-sweep the trail

to home and family.

I liked the feeling of outside and inside - out in the cold and almost alone, then trying to get home. I liked the deer bit and the 'snowshoe-sweep' a lot too. I've always assumed chickadee was a chicken - but a quick google showed how wrong I was! What a beautiful little bird.

Hello Rhiannonw, yes it is except for the deer which poked his face through a storm another time. When I was a young lad, my dad worked  in copper and gold mines around northern Quebec and Ontario as dynamite men along with his twin brother. ALSO it was very normal to go hunting, fishing, hiking and tenting in any kind of weather throughout the year, FROM the ages of eight and up. Dad said I was going to turn into a tree considering my love of the woods. There was an abundance of wolves, foxes, bear, coyotes, beaver, partridge, rabbits, fish and especially moose, we grew up with weapons. My first single shot Cooey rifle at 12 and a .303 jungle carabine at fourteen which I carried for years in the deep and very thick forest miles and miles from the nearest human. smiley
