Rain

falls heavily
through
the wire mesh
of cage
plinking pellets
against
Storm’s water
dish

and the
dog’s
Pyrenee breed
of distinction
anxious to perform
his duties---

encourage
sheep into a circle
of protection
keeping a keen
eye for
coyotes baring
fangs and
challenge them
in a frontal
assault
and prove he
is more
than a
family pet.
