Settlers Passed This Way

A tired-looking wagon trail
overcame pasture’s ridge
wheel ruts dug deeply
in the mud of ancient days
my footsteps following
with adventure on my mind.
Left in the dim of morning
to seek out any old farm
abandoned yet fully alive
in its survival nature
a land of early heritage.
I sought to eagerly explore
one of those homesteads
from brave settlers who
toiled before modern times
their memories left in
haste as family moved on.
I did make a few discoveries
old well and other items
scattered in hasty disarray
also implements of worth
earning joy from early days
And I pursue an urgent need
escaping across that same
ridge of possibilities. Wagon
ruts leading me on and on.
