A Settler’s Trail
An old wagon trail
overcame pasture’s ridge
wheel ruts dug deeply
in the mud of ancient days
my footsteps following
with adventure on my mind.
Left early this morning
to seek out any old farm
abandoned yet alive
in the true nature
of an early heritage.
I sought to explore
these old homesteads
with memories left in
haste as they moved on.
And I did discover an
old well and other items
scattered in disarray
also implements of worth
in the joy of early days
from brave settlers who
came before my time.
Now I am in urgent need
escaping across that same
ridge of new possibilities wagon
ruts leading me on and on.
