“Y’all got cooties”
hasten children home
welfare earns
the bread in this family.

Hard to get six-year
old Jordan
in the bath tub
after school’s busy day

their small shack
stuck off county road 46
no indoor plumbing
Sheldon the oldest brother
momma’s hero.

In the backyard they play
arms busy
fending off Harry
feet racing Michael for the
soccer ball

worn-out later Sheldon asks
“Supper ready mom?”

Nice to have a good kid all
grown up into eleven
years of age
tomorrow.

Hi Jenny, thanks for the words. This poem is about an actual family living on the outskirts of Wyoming, Ontario a beautiful town of 1,700. I was Administrator of the County Social Services at the time. My caseworker suggested I come with her to visit the family living like this in one of the well-to-do areas of Ontario. We helped them.
