Themes of Innocence

Walk me into
the morning sun -- and
watching from a large branch
a hawk shuffles one restive wing.
A cat pounces on a mouse
its squeal -- an act of surrender
leaves signalling danger.
We are not unlike
the mourning dove --
who observes in lonely attitude
not wishing to enter any fray.
