There Are Tiny People

who grow taller
than mushrooms
and their eyes
can pierce cloudy skies
even see the moon
reveal its flashlight trail
on an evening
of lake surface gleam.
They can also swallow
mosquitoes for food
even though frogs
are not happy to share
their own supply
but then a fair plan
is worked out
as humans often do-
Oh grandpa this story is a little too weird
can’t you tell a better one before I go to sleep?
Ssshhh child I will if you promise to go to
bed after I finish – deal?
OK grandpa. They slapped fives.
Once upon a time
two seeds were flung into
the sky carried upon
a fierce current of wind.
They tossed and
turned and bumped
and jostled before
landing in an area of
fertile soil on the edge
of a grown forest.
It was very scary landing
beside mature trees.
How could they make friends
with such a large forest?
This story is much better. Thank you grandpa.
You’re welcome my dear grandson.
As seasons roiled by
both seedlings came to
grow big and strong
among snow storms and
violent winds along
with animals and bird-nest
building under boughs.
Yes indeed both friends
were proud to be part
of this growing forest. But
one thing was missing
a chance to give each other
a hand shake as friends do.
Their branches did not reach
each other and it was sad.
One day a large moose
with wide antlers and a bell
of furry beard hung low
passed under large branches
across his personal trail
and lifted high enough to
allow friends to brush together,
And now they were so glad.
Did you like this story about friendship?
asked grandpa noticing his grandson now
asleep, I guess you did came as a smile.
