Remember the peanut man
and his sales pitch --
Chips Nuts only a dollar!
(a lot in those days)

In 1976 everyone roared
Reggie’s at bat!
We loved that Detroit team.

Outside our bus window
a few blocks away
the silence was stifling
messed-up streets alarming

a crowd of winos
no baseball excitement
in their eyes --
only an ache from last night’s
snooze in the Laundromat
dull stares left for another day.

Remember them my sons as
family gathers you in
with the love of their hearts.
