To Toronto

Near Brockville, highway
401 rubber tires discard as skin
asphalt treadmill is wearing
on the semis, humming
wheels pacing a parade of cars
signs are mannequins in
colourful shapes, messages a blur
telephone poles meeting
vehicle movements, hurrying
to the big city
trees shelter villages growing
into towns, traffic going on and on…
Holsteins graze peacefully,
civilization a storm that awaits.
