Colin was nervous as the donkey came towards him. Eeyore’s brown and white face came closer. CLOSER.
Then his soft nose rubbed against Colin’s hand, easily taking the piece of apple.
The boy was excited to visit his grandpa’s farm. Next came three nosey llamas. Their long necks and skinny legs galloped towards him.
One grinch-like face almost rubbed against the boy’s nose. Then he turned and joined the other llamas as they raced to other adventures.
“Grandma!” Colin shouted. “They like me!”
He was sure they knew he came from the city. Later he patted Ernie, the horse, watched Dexter cows and listened to the sheep.
BAAA! They called over and over.
Grandma brought him a lunch snack of peanut butter sandwiches and cheese chunks.
Suppertime was delicious—ham and chicken. Colin even ate his cranberry sauce.
Tomorrow grandpa said he would show him some Ruffed Grouse.
“Do they bite people?” Colin asked.
“No, but if you get too close, they’ll fly away” said grandpa.
My goodness, thought Colin, something in the woods is afraid of a little boy. He promised grandpa, the bird of the forest would not be afraid. Colin would do exactly as grandpa said.
